Mtatsminda Pantheon

Places to visit in Tbilisi, Georgia country

The Mtatsminda Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures is a necropolis located in Tbilisi. Here the prominent artists, writers, scholars and national heroes of Georgian history are buried. The Pantheon is situated in the churchyard around St. David’s Church and was founded in 1929.  “Mamadaviti” lies on the slope of Mount Mtastminda (mean: Holy Mountain). At the top of the mountain is Mtatsminda Park, which is an amusement park and belongs to the Municipality of Tbilisi.

The first renowned people buried here were Russian writer A. Griboyedov and his Georgian wife, Nino Chavchavadze. The Pantheon was officially established in 1929 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Griboyedov’s death.

The Pantheon is under the administration of the Government of Tbilisi and is visited both by local people and visitors of the city.

Georgians respect their history, and the Pantheon is its proof. Even if you are not interested in the history, it’s worth to pay a visit here at least to admire the beauty of Tbilisi from above. You can go up in funicular and walk down on foot. It is a peaceful and beautiful place, and you should add it to your must-see list when being in Tbilisi.
